Meet this week's Spotlight, All-Star Tutor-Mentor Steph Vawser. Steph is studying a Bachelor of Primary School Education (Honours) at Monash University. She loves Musical Theatre: rehearsing for local productions, watching musical DVDs and musical theatre clips on youtube, and putting on soundtracks and singing along to them.
1. What do you like best about being a Tutor-Mentor?
I love watching my students grow socially and academically over time . Being a Tutor-Mentor allows me to see them develop and support them throughout their journey.
2. What subjects do you like teaching and why?
I enjoy teaching literacy because you can have so much fun with it. It is something that is everywhere in our world, so you can always make those connections to real world examples with students to make it more meaningful to learn.
3. What is your favourite moment as a Tutor-Mentor?
My favourite moments as a Tutor-Mentor are the ‘ah HA’ moments. There is no greater moment when after a long struggle, a student finally understands how to do something and seeing the joy across their face makes me feel happy. Knowing that you and your student have both achieved something is a confidence booster and very rewarding.
4. What advice would you give to new TutorBright Tutor-Mentors?
My advice would be that even if your students don’t see it, just remember that you are making a huge difference to their education, so make every moment count. If you find that something doesn’t work so well, always reflect and re-visit the following week.
5. What quote would you use to describe your life motto?
I saw this great quote the other day which I think a lot of learners and teachers can relate to. It goes ..
“Tell me and I forget,
Teach me and I remember,
Involve me and I learn”
- Benjamin Franklin
It goes along with my philosophy of a hands on approach to teaching.
